Overview

Northwest Michigan Arts & Culture Network (the Network) is a 501(c)3 organization based in Traverse City, MI and serving the ten counties of Northwest Michigan (Antrim, Benzie, Charlevoix, Emmet, Grand Traverse, Kalkaska, Leelanau, Manistee, Missaukee, Wexford). Similar to a regional arts council, its mission is to support and strengthen the collective power of artists, culture bearers, and the creative sector to cultivate vibrant communities. The Network furthers its mission through its strategic priorities of Connections, Capacity Building, and Communications.

The associate director is a vital member of the Network team with responsibilities in administration, membership, programming, and engagement in collaboration with the executive director (ED). This is a new position designed to mentor the successful candidate into the executive director role within a year.

This full-time, salaried position is ideal for an entrepreneurial, task oriented, and highly organized professional who values community building, collaboration, teamwork, and working in an impactful, creative, mission-driven environment. This position averages 40 hours per week but offers great flexibility in scheduling and workspace. Work will be conducted both remotely and in person from the Network office in Traverse City, and at member and public sites throughout the region. Hours are flexible, but will occasionally include some evening and weekend hours.

Salary range is $50,000-55,000, with benefits negotiated.

General Administration

  • Act as a primary contact for members, public and stakeholders regarding inquiries, referrals, assistance, and access to services.
  • Participate in monthly board meetings, including providing monthly reports of activities, membership data and related updates.
  • Collaborate with the ED and board to implement the Network’s strategic plan
  • Work with administrative support to manage and maintain record keeping, finances, member/stakeholder data, and related organizational records. Learn and administer compliancy requirements (i.e., 990, State/Federal licensures, MACC, etc.)
  • Support and manage member communications including billing, renewals, and related QuickBooks invoicing, in collaboration with the executive director and admin support.

Strategic Priorities: Connecting

  • Represent the Network with members, prospective members, stakeholders, and communities at large in the 10-county region, in collaboration with the executive director and board.
  • Active outreach and relationship building throughout the Network with significant attention to developing relationships, outreach, and member engagement in outlying counties.
  • Reshape the membership program to build engagement, investment, and financial support from the Network’s core constituencies, building on the basic membership program started in FY21.
  • Identify and recommend opportunities for greater engagement among Network, prospective members, non-creative sector stakeholders and the broader community.
  • Spearhead engagement events such as periodic After Hours, Happy Hours, Coffee Chats, Zoom Roundtables, etc. for members and the community at large.

 Strategic Priorities: Capacity Building

  • Support annual summit planning and implementation, including program planning, speakers, resources, sponsor solicitation, and promotion, in collaboration with the planning team.
  • Identify opportunities for and help to develop member programming and backbone services.
  • Provide fee-for-service training or consulting services as contracted by members and stakeholders (e.g., strategic planning, facilitation, board training, etc.).
  • Collaborate with the executive director to strengthen fund development, including grants, sponsorships, annual campaign, donor cultivation/stewardship, and general fundraising.

Strategic Priorities: Communications

  • Recommend and execute communication strategies and tactics to support Network goals.
  • Identify media sources/PR opportunities to build outreach efforts.
  • Encourage and facilitate member cross promotion and utilization of Network resources (i.e., web showcase, media, branding)
  • Provide content creation for social media, e-news, website, print and other media.
  • Represent the Network in public meetings.

Michigan Arts & Culture Council (MACC):

  • Participate in regional and state grant review panels and process.
  • With the executive director, engage with state colleagues and the MACC regrant network
  • Learn the compliancy and contracting responsibilities of the MACC regrant program.
  • Assist in MACC grant applications, minigrant management, reports, and grantee relationships.
  • Represent and promote MACC within the region as needed and requested.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience
  • Background in arts and culture and/or nonprofit administration

Skills:

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Grant writing and fund development experience
  • Marketing communications
  • Training and/or meeting facilitation
  • Event planning and facilitation
  • Community and/or media relations
  • Proficient with technology and online applications (We use Google Workspace, Salesforce, WordPress, Canva, Mailchimp, QuickBooks, Instagram, Facebook,)
