Artful Hearts Benefits Open Bowls

Calling Artists and Art Lovers

Do you have works of art that speak to the theme of hunger and food security that you would share for an event exhibition on hunger?

Do you have artwork that you would consider donating that will buy food for needy families in the Grand Traverse region?

The Northwest Food Coalition is holding its second Empty Bowls event on Sunday,

April 28, 2024 at Howe Arena in Traverse City to benefit its Farm 2 Neighbor Fund. The funds we raise will purchase fresh fruits, vegetables and lean protein from local small farms and be distributed to nearly 80 food pantries, emergency meal sites, and food programs.

We estimate 39% of our Grand Traverse area neighbors are food insecure, struggling to afford basic living expenses such as housing, food, transportation, childcare, and healthcare. Many who are impacted are children.

Empty Bowls is about neighbors supporting neighbors.

Empty Bowls an international project to fight hunger, a concept was born in 1996 by artists attending a ceramics class in southeast Michigan. Empty Bowls restarted in northern Michigan in 2022. Throughout its history – locally and beyond – Empty Bowls remains rooted in art. Each event guest receives a handmade bowl as a reminder of the many empty bowls so many in our communities face every day.

We hope to build on our creative foundation locally. In 2023, there were roughly 1000 original bowls donated and sold during the event as well as demonstrations by ceramic and wood turning artists. This year, we hope to include more artistic disciplines, especially the visual arts, in the event.

Would you consider participating? Here are several ways that you can support Empty Bowls:

  • Event Exhibition: An event exhibition – Artful Hearts: Brushing Away Hunger – will be displayed during the 4/28 event. Works will be displayed on easels and securely monitored by event volunteers. Do you have or would you create a piece that reflects the spirit of Empty Bowls that could be exhibited during the event?
  • Artist Demonstrations: Would you be willing to participate as a demonstrating artist. Demos will be scheduled in 1 hour time blocks.
  • Donated Works: A “Buy It Now” space will feature small works that attendees can purchase, traditionally for $50 or less. Do you have a small piece that you would be willing to donate to the event? All proceeds from Buy It Now will buy healthy food for those in need.

All artists will be credited, unless you request to be anonymous. Exhibition artists and artists that donate a  “Buy It Now” pieces will receive a free ticket (Value $35) to the event. There were 700+ attendees in 2023 and we anticipate the same this year.  Tickets go on sale in January 2024.  We would love to have you join us.

If you are interested in participating, or have more questions, please contact Kathy Maly at malyk805@gmail.com or call 248.885.1252.
