Minnie Wabanimkee

Minnie Wabanimkee is a full blood Odawa member of the Grand Traverse Band of Odawa and Chippewa Indians. She is a photographer, videographer, journalist and artist specializing in images of Native culture, life, and dance, primarily in the Midwest. Her photographs are featured in the book Contemporary Great Lakes Pow Wow Regalia: “Nda Maamawigaami (Together We Dance),” among other publications and have been featured in exhibitions in state and national museums. Minnie was awarded the Robert F. Kennedy Journalism Award for Excellence in Photojournalism.

“Documenting native people has been my life’s work and salvation. My legacy will be in my photographs long after I am gone, and I take comfort in that,” Minnie said.  “Meaningful work has always been my objective, and I am honing my skills in videography, another valuable medium to tell our stories..”

Minnie is currently working on a major project telling the story of Native quillwork artists – It’s More Than Quillbox/Ooshme Gaawiyekaajigan aawon, being developed by Michigan State University Museum, Ziibiwing Center of Anishinabe Culture & Lifeways, Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe of Michigan, Eyaawing Museum and Cultural Center of the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians, Ojibwe Cultural Foundation, MSU Native American Institute and the Michigan Traditional Arts Program.

The exhibition and related publications are slated for fall 2024, and is made possible with support from Terra Foundation for American Art, National Endowment for the Arts, Institute for Museum and Library Services, Ziibiwing Center for Anishinabe Culture and Lifeways, MSU Native American Institute, Michigan State University Museum, Michigan Traditional Arts Program, MSU University Outreach and Engagement, Michigan State University/Andrew W. Mellon Foundation – Less Commonly Taught and Indigenous Languages Partnership with additional in-kind support from the Ojibwe Cultural Foundation, Northwest Michigan Arts & Culture Network, and the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians.
