Full job description
Executive Director
Salaried, Part-time, Year-Round
About Big Water Creative Arts
Big Water Creative Arts (BWCA) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to sharing the joy of music through education, instruction, and performances that build community and enhance the quality of life in Northern Michigan. Through partnerships with schools and community organizations, BWCA provides music programming that fosters creativity, collaboration, and artistic expression.
BWCA has experienced tremendous growth in recent years, expanding its reach, programming, and impact. This Executive Director position directly results from that growth and represents a critical investment in the organization’s future. With this leadership role, BWCA aims to build on its success, strengthen operations, and position itself to achieve its strategic goals.
Our Core Values
Music for EveryoneWe believe music should be accessible to all, regardless of age, ability, or background.
Joy Through MusicWe celebrate the creativity, self-expression, and connection that music inspires.
Equitable AccessWe are committed to offering free and affordable music education for diverse learners.
Filling the GapsWe partner with schools and community groups to provide music programs where they’re needed most.
Building CommunityWe believe music strengthens communities by fostering collaboration, connection, and belonging.
Position Overview
The Executive Director (ED) leads BWCA’s daily operations, including program coordination, instructor support, stakeholder communication, fundraising, and partnership development. As the organization’s sole staff member, the ED will actively execute programs, build relationships, and ensure financial sustainability while advancing BWCA’s mission and strategic priorities. This position is ideal for a self-starter who enjoys working independently while being part of a vibrant community of musicians, educators, and partners.
While the Executive Director oversees a broad range of responsibilities, day-to-day activities ebb and flow throughout the year. For example, on average, there are fewer than 12 financial transactions per month outside of fundraising campaigns, making the workload dynamic but manageable.
The Executive Director reports to the Board of Directors and has a direct report to the Board President.
