Six Mile Strings
Visiting from Detroit, Yuri Popowcyz, Natalie Frakes, Alycia Wilder, and Tom Sullivan are a string quartet of friends who focus on performing classical and contemporary works.
Expanding the scope and artistry of the traditional string quartets by working with artists of many genres and across disciplines, Six Mile Strings are also all educators, and the quartet works to provide insights and connections to the contemporary world of music.
Lauded as “the most fun string quartet in the world” by Interlochen Public Radio’s Kate Botello, 6MS strives to bring a wide variety of genres, styles and compositions to the ears of listeners live in the hall or in the home.
From the Artists:
Our debut album “Up North” can be found on major streaming platforms. Recorded at IPR’s studio A, “Up North” showcases the talents of Detroit-based contemporary composers and producers alike. Worlds collide with original compositions commissioned by 6MS and their remixes by Detroit producers.
As well as being advocates for contemporary classical music, 6MS can also be found on recordings of a variety of genres ranging from jazz to folk to Detroit Techno. We've worked with Detroit legends Waajeed, Amp Fiddler, jessica Care moore, Jon Dixon, Sheefy McFly, and Charles Trees. Our classical repertoire includes the works of Mendelssohn, Beethoven, Dvorak, Schubert, among others.
Other project we've be part of include being the founding quartet for Urban Art Orchestra, we've recorded the theme song with Sara Bareilles for Shattered Glass Podcast, scored a commercial for the Australian Centre for Moving Image, and more. Our mission as an ensemble is to continue breaking the boundaries for what string quartets do.
We are all educators and deep advocates of music for social change. We believe in zero barriers of entry to listening, learning, and exploring the transformative effects music has for all of us.
