National Writer's Series presents: Timothy Snyder
Event and Book. Please note this event is taking place virtually only. Tickets purchased are for the livestreamed event. NWS is excited to host bestselling author Timothy Snyder who wrote On Tyranny. His new book, On Freedom, is Snyder’s most ambitious and personal book yet. Snyder will discuss his new book with NWS co-founder and New York Times Bestselling author, Doug Stanton. A culmination of his decades of scholarship, On Freedom brings together the insightful themes and big picture analysis for which he is known to craft a work of political philosophy imbued with hope. Through a combination of anecdotes, deep reflections, and a nuanced examination of our current political and cultural moment, On Freedom is a call to our human experience and an invitation to create a democracy that can be freer and more fulfilling than what we have known. Snyder argues that the idea of freedom has been distorted, with calls for negative freedom or freedom from (oversight, regulation, government power); but what we should be fighting for is positive freedom, the freedom to (engage, create, reason) which connects principle to practice through its five essential forms: Sovereignty: the learned capacity to make choices, Unpredictability: the power to adapt physical regularities to personal purposes, Mobility: the power to move through a life following values, Factuality: the grip on the world that allows us to change it, Solidarity: the recognition that freedom is for everyone.
