Coffee @ Ten: Great Lakes Sea Lampreys: From Crisis to Control
Dr. Miehls will talk about one of the most notorious creatures in the Great Lakes—the sea lamprey. All attendees will have an opportunity to meet—and even hold—these vampire fish of the Great Lakes!
Andrea Miehls is a Communications Associate for the Great Lakes Fishery Commission (GLFC), stationed at the USGS Hammond Bay Biological Station near Rogers City, Michigan. Andrea is a life-long resident of the Great Lakes region, growing up in northeastern Illinois just a short bike ride away from Lake Michigan, traveling to East Lansing, Michigan for graduate work, and finally moving to northeastern Michigan twelve years ago to live and work on Lake Huron. Andrea has a fondness for wildlife of many kinds but is drawn professionally to some rather creepy organisms. Andrea's scientific background has focused on understanding the effects of non-native species on Great Lakes food webs. She has a Master's degree and PhD from Michigan State University studying zebra mussels and spiny water fleas. In 2012 Andrea began working for the Great Lakes Fishery Commission, the organization that coordinates Great Lakes sea lamprey control and funds scientific research to protect and ensure vibrant Great Lakes fisheries. Andrea loves her communications position and is happy to present about sea lampreys, the vampires of the Great Lakes.
